Get Your Back to the Sky

I’m delighted to share with you some of the things the Lord has been teaching me over the past month or so. My prayer for you is that as you read this the Holy Spirit will begin to rise up in you…you are so loved by Jesus. One of the commitments I made over the past month was to take some time every day to get down on my face before the Lord. When Beth Moore first suggested this posture, I really did not think it would make that big of a difference, but I was wrong.  The posture demonstrates a reverence and surrender. I believe God truly does honor your expression.  As you start each morning face on the floor it truly sets the tone for your day. In Leviticus 9:24, it discusses the glory of the Lord appearing before all the people and their response was to shout for joy and fall face down. 1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that HE may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” Friends, let us shout for joy and fall face down! In God’s economy, the way up is down.

What is it worth?

Everything in life is valued at ‘something.’ What we personally view that ‘something’ as is what we term ‘worth’ (noun). The value or worth of something is different from one person to the next. For example, being the history nerd that I am, I think that Abraham Lincoln’s top hat is worth a very high price and would be willing to spend quite a bit on it (if I had the money to do so, that is). Person B, however, might look at the hat and see its worth at perhaps a $1 or so. The worth of the hat to me is greater than the worth of the hat to Person B.
Some items in this world can not necessarily be placed within a monetary or materialistic value. For example, the terrorists of 9/11 found their cause to be worthy. They were not receiving anything of value (money, cars, houses, etc.) in this life, but rather they wanted to make a statement about the cause they found worthy.
Merriam-Webster defines worth as: a) monetary value—“the farmhouse is of little worth”; b) moral or personal value—“we are trying to teach the worth of human life”.
A question that I would like to propose would be: what is it worth to you to live your life according to God’s Word and will? Is it of high value or is it something we could do without? Furthermore, why is Jesus worthy to live for? To die for?
While I was reading over Revelation 4 and 5 today, I came across answers (for myself) to these aforementioned questions.
Jesus is worthy…why?
First, He is worth it! The devil tries to convince us that we are getting a bad deal from God and that it is not worth the trouble to be diligent to His call on our life. We begin to believe these things the devil tells us and we begin to say to our self “it is too hard to give up _____” (fill in the blank…pride, sexual urges, anger, resentment, hatred, etc.) The devil says “give in and give up because it is too hard to follow God…He expects too much from you!” Paul counterattacks this claim by saying “I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish…” (Philippians 3:8) What did Paul value or see as worthy? Jesus and Jesus alone. All other things (material items, bodily urges, emotional thoughts) were “rubbish” to him. Is it worth giving up personal things simply because God is good?
Second, Jesus is capable. He is the only one with enough power to overtake this corrupted world and renew it. I mentioned in an earlier blog some of the evil that is very present in this world today. NO ONE is capable of removing all that evil alone (or even as a group). Jesus is the ONLY one with the authority and power to cleanse the Earth and make it new. He is asking us (the Bride) to join with Him as He renews the world. Is it worth giving up personal things to join Him in this renewal?
Third, Jesus deserves it. In the beginning, God gave ALL authority to Adam (Genesis 1:28). Adam forfeited his authority to Satan (Genesis 3, Luke 4:6). Jesus reclaimed the authority. Although Jesus and His bride have authority over the Earth, Satan still rules the Earth with minimized power and NO authority. As a church body, we need to realize that Satan no longer has authority and we must fully accept that He has no right to rule in individual’s lives. Jesus has proven himself worthy by making every choice in love and righteousness with the Bride in mind. Is it worth giving up personal things to see God’s perfect plan for individuals accomplished?
People (even ‘Christians’) are constantly compromising their values in today’s society. Is it worth it? Is that momentary pleasure worth more than Jesus’ death on the cross? Is it worth more than the beatings He received? Is it worth more than eternity?
I cannot force anyone to see loving Jesus as worthy or valuable. I can only explain to them why I see him as worthy and valuable and in turn, hopefully they (with the help of the Holy Spirit) will also see Him as a worthy and valuable cause to live for.
My challenge for myself today is to live a life worthy of His death.

Rewards for Being a Bold Leader

We live in a society where the more work and responsibility we take on, the more we will be rewarded. In God’s Kingdom, the same holds true!

We go in for a job interview and are offered a job (consider this the free gift of salvation that God offers us). We can either choose to take the job (accept Christ) or do something else (not accept Christ). IF we do take the job, we enter into the job at an introductory level. The rest is up to you.

If you are perfectly content with working at the lowest level with the least responsibility, your pay will remain minimum wage (at least you have job security...i.e. you still get to keep the gift of salvation). If you choose to work hard and seek a promotion, you will be given more responsibility with higher pay.

Sometimes taking on more responsibility at work is not a good thing. Longer hours, more stress, less free time. But in God’s Kingdom, it is always a good thing. Greater joy, more freedom, and awesome eternal rewards which we will get to keep forever!

What does taking a job promotion in God’s Kingdom look like? If we look to the beginning of Revelation (chapters 2-3), we find God giving instructions to the churches. But not just to the churches, more specifically to the angel of the church. The Greek word used here for angel is ‘angelos’ which also means ‘messenger’. This word is used to describe John the Baptist (Matthew 11:10, Mark 1:2). John the Baptist was an ‘angel’ or 'messenger.’ We, as leaders in God’s Kingdom, are also ‘angels’ or ‘messengers.’ (I am obviously not referring here to celestial beings, but rather as overseers…or going along with our analogy of the workplace, as supervisors.)

The messenger is responsible to guard the message (God’s word) and not let it be distorted through compromise, fear, or neglect. The apostolic leaders are responsible before God to boldly proclaim what Jesus revealed in these letters and to establish an action plan to implement the truths. Leaders must not draw back when others become angry at Jesus’ message in Revelation 2-3. (Consider this our job description if we are willing to be promoted.)

We must also be consistently bold. People follow whatever message is publicly proclaimed so long as it is grounded in truth, consistent, and bold.

How can we be consistently bold? By knowing the rewards we will receive. These are not bribes. While at work, we know that if the boss is watching and we do just a little extra we will receive more money or perhaps a raise. We are of course going to do our best to perform. But this is totally up to us! The boss is not forcing us to work harder for a pay raise, we must want the raise our self.

We do NOT get to Heaven on our works. That is VERY true statement—salvation is a completely free gift. It is our ticket to Heaven. BUT, the Word tells us that faith without works is dead. Not only that, but in Revelation, it is revealed that the more work we perform here on earth, the more rewards we will receive in Heaven. You will still get to Heaven even without these extra works, but why would we not want those extra rewards?

We will all receive different amounts of each of the rewards based on our diligence (job performance) here on Earth. When put in this perspective, it makes perfect sense. Person A and Person B are both Christians (they have both accepted the free gift of salvation). Person A is continually praying for people, helping the poor, the widows, the orphans, leading others and being a disciple. Person B is attending church on Sunday morning and is not doing any of the other things that Person A is doing. Again, they will both be in Heaven, but Person A is certainly going to be given more rewards for their works.

My challenge for the day is to be diligent in my work while in this life. I want to have an increase in my blessings and I want to see God’s Kingdom strengthened.

Below are the twenty eternal rewards that I have been mentioning. They are found in Revelation 2-3.

Our Twenty Eternal Rewards:

to eat from the tree of life in the midst of Paradise (2:7);
to receive the crown of life (2:10);
to not be hurt by the second death (2:11);
to eat hidden manna (2:17);
to receive a white stone (2:17);
to receive a new name written on the stone (2:17);
to have power over the nations (2:26);
to receive the morning star (2:28);
to receive white garments (3:5);
to receive a name that is not blotted from the Book of Life (3:5);
for Jesus to confess one’s name before the Father and angels (3:5);
for one’s persecutors to worship before their feet (3:9);
for one’s persecutors to know that Jesus loves them (3:9);
to be made a pillar in God’s temple (3:12);
to have God’s name, the New Jerusalem’s name, and Jesus’ new name written on them (3:12);
to receive gold to make one rich (3:18);
to receive white garments (3:18);
to have anointed eyes to see more (3:18);
to eat with Jesus (3:20);
to sit on His throne. (3:21).

Are we listening?

One of my biggest pet peeves is listening. Anyone who knows me knows that I find listening skills to be of the utmost value. In fact, while in marriage counseling, we had to take the “5 Love Languages” quiz to see which ‘love language’ we are and it turns out that my love language is ‘quality time.’ When I first saw this result, I thought “yeah right. I really enjoy my time away from people” (I often enjoy doing things on my own.) But after closer examination of what ‘quality time’ means, I learned that there is a mighty difference between ‘quality time’ and ‘quantity time.’ Applied to my life: I enjoy being alone (sometimes), but when I am with people, I want it to be quality—i.e. full attention by all parties in conversation, doing something together memorable, and…fully listening and engaged.
But what does it mean to ‘listen to God’? We often hear this phrase thrown about in church circles. We are trying to figure out what our next move in life is—“Have you heard from God?” We are trying to decide on whether or not to transfer jobs—“ What is God telling you?” We wonder if we should really get married, have a baby, etc. etc.—“What is God laying on your heart?”
God tells us “He who has an ear, let him hear” 16 times in the New Testament (8 times in the Gospels and 8 times in Revelation). This is the instruction that Jesus stressed the most in his earthly ministry.
In the study that I am doing on Revelation, Mike Bickle teaches that there are five implications behind God’s call to let us hear:
1)      It signaled that the truth being proclaimed was extremely important to Jesus.
2)      It calls us to pay careful attention to what Jesus is saying and that there is more than what is immediately obvious to our human eyes. We must not be content with understanding only what is on the surface. Jesus is calling us to diligently focus on pursuing the deeper truth being set before us.
3)      It takes the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit to grasp it. The unaided mind of even a devoted believer will not be able to automatically comprehend the truth being set forth. Jesus is making it clear it is beyond our natural ability. Jesus wants us to ask the Spirit for help.
4)      He most often gave this exhortation related to eternal rewards. Every time Jesus spoke of one of the 22 eternal rewards, He warned us to have ears to hear, because it takes supernatural insight to grasp the 22 rewards (which I will post tomorrow). When reading each reward, pray, “Lord, show me more.”
5)      It takes a focused determination to lay hold of the truths being referred to. We do not automatically respond in a deep and sustained way to them. It will take a tenacious commitment to maintain these truths in our lives long-term because of our propensity to lose touch with them.
It is interesting to note that the five implications that Mike mentions concerning Jesus’ exhortation to “hear” can be applied to our day-to-day listening abilities amongst our friends and co-workers. Read over those five bold implications and think about how they are applied to our human listening skills. We listen because something is extremely important. Because something is extremely important we pay careful attention so as not to miss any detail. We may occasionally need help to comprehend what is being told to us and therefore we may seek out references. Because we are careful in listening, we receive rewards whether it is with good grades, growing friendships, obtaining trust, etc. And finally, we must be determined in order to continue with our good listening skills. Listening is not always an easy task and therefore we must work at it continually in order to perfect it.
In the same way that we listen to friends, teachers, parents, and bosses, we must also listen to God. If at first you do not fully comprehend His voice, ask for clarification.
So what or who are we listening to? I believe listening skills have been forgotten. In 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade we had to take tests on our listening comprehension. As we became older we were still tested on comprehension, but not necessarily on listening comprehension. Our society is so inundated by media and technology that we have forgotten what is going on around us. We talk to people as they stare at their phones. We try and explain things to our friends as they are glued to the TV. Music is so noisy in the car that we don’t even communicate in those close proximities anymore. While I was working in D.C., I would take public transportation to and from work for hours each day. Not once did I get to sit down and talk with someone about their life because of their intense focus on their laptops, their iPods, or their newspaper. Not that media and technology itself is necessarily evil, but we tune out the rest of our lives to focus on those things. We need to refocus and realize that we are missing so much around us because we are not listening anymore due to distractions.
My challenge for the day (for myself) is to disconnect from the buzzing noises around me and to refocus on God first and foremost and secondly on those things and people directly around me (i.e. not on the computer, phone, TV).

What is YOUR purpose?

What is our purpose in life and how do we fulfill this purpose?
Over the years, we (Ricky and Mandy) have found that nominal Christianity (a.k.a. Sunday morning/Easter/Christmas Christianity) is not cutting it. Our society is in 'self-destruct mode'. You name any destructive element and we, as a society, possess it: wars, gang violence, poverty, pollution, greed, a thriving sex-saturated media, broken homes, broken marriages, deception, genocide, ethnic tension, hate, murder, theft, drug and alcohol abuse. You name it, it's there! The list goes on and on. Go to a news website right now... http://www.cnn.com/ , http://www.foxnews.com/ , http://www.msnbc.com/http://www.cbsnews.com/ and look at the headlines. Why are there never any encouraging and uplifting news stories? Because the Body is not working the way it should be. Do not get us wrong, there are a lot of great things happening out there by a lot of great people, but the overwhelming truth is that this society is becoming more corrupt and destructive as the days go on. The Body of Christ is called to a HIGHER standard!
We (Ricky and Mandy) recently moved to Charleston, South Carolina in an effort to follow after God's call for our hearts. We received a lot of criticism (and some support) for this move, but we knew in our hearts that we must ultimately listen to our Father and do as He says.
We married on June 18, 2011 and by July 1, we were in our new place. We have been beyond blessed through connections we have made with our church, our new friends, and our work places. By relying upon one another solely in this transition, our marriage has been significantly strengthened and we find ourselves loving one another more each day.
Not only have we gained these wonderful things, but our relationship with our Heavenly Father has been brought to a whole new level. After about a month of on-and-off prayer time/Bible study, we decided that we would forever end this ebb and flow of a relaxed Christian lifestyle. On August 15, 2011, we began what we termed "Jesus P90X". You may be thinking "what a cheesy name," but the 'p' and the 'x' in P90X stands for 'power' and 'extreme'. THAT is what we are looking for in our relationship with God...extreme power! Just as it is important for us to strengthen our outer man (physical body), it is imperative that we strengthen our inner man (spiritual body).
Over the past month, we have learned some wonderful things and through it, have grown closer to our Creator. We want to challenge everyone around us to join us on this journey as we draw closer to Heaven and Heaven draws closer to us. Through it, you will not be disappointed, but rather, you will grow in power, strengthen, resistance, and ultimately COMPLETE freedom!
Can you imagine a world without bondage? We can, but it will only happen with our sincere hearts turned back to the Father. (Malachi 4:6, Joel 1:13-14)
We call this blog "Letters from His Beloved" because that is what we are. We are HIS BELOVED!! The postings on this blog are to encourage you to begin your OWN pursuing relationship with the Lord. Wake up a little earlier each morning and begin your day with Him in prayer, worship, and Bible study...watch your life transform and watch your society be changed.
Beloved, you are seen as a beautiful created being in the eyes of your Maker. Rejoice today, for the King is alive!

Our Challenge to you is this:
-Begin a regimen. Set a time aside EACH day to spend with the Lord. Do not take it flippantly. See it as a meeting with the King. If the president or a leader of a nation called you up and asked to meet with you immediately, would you not drop everything you were doing and get there? We always put things aside for job interviews, meetings with friends, and time on the internet or playing video games. Why don’t we set aside time each day to meet with God?
-Find a study and stick to it. Take a book from the Bible and find a commentary. Currently, Mandy is doing a study by Beth Moore entitled “Stepping Up: The Psalms of Ascent” and Ricky is doing a study on the Book of Revelation by Mike Bickle. There are a lot of great resources out there to help you on this journey. (We recommend www.mikebickle.org for a ton of GREAT and FREE studies.) Dive deep in the Word and set challenges for yourself.
-Take time apart to pray. Make a prayer list of things you want to see changed (lives, cities, nations, etc.). There is a great book by Dutch Sheets entitled "Intercessory Prayer" and a follow-up entitled "Authority in Prayer" that we highly recommend if you are in need of strengthening this area of your life.
-Finally, create an account on YouTube or iTunes and download some worship music that will connect your heart to the Father’s. We highly recommend Misty Edwards, Corey Asbury, Jay Thomas, Kim Walker, or anyone from IHOP or Jesus Culture. *Also, check out the 24/7 Prayer Room at http://www.ihop.org/ -- this prayer room has been praying and worshipping for 24/7/365 without cease since 1999!
-By incorporating these three elements (Word, Worship, and Prayer), you will be guaranteed to meet God in His highest courts!
Note: You don’t have to have the same EXACT time each day (i.e. 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.), but by doing this, it helps you make it a pattern in your life.
